Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a therapeutic Dungeons & Dragons group?
This group uses the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons to help participants build social skills, practice problem-solving, and enhance emotional regulation in a fun, immersive, and collaborative setting. The sessions are facilitated by a licensed therapist trained in group dynamics and role-playing games.
Who is this group designed for?
The group is ideal for individuals who want to develop or improve social skills, such as teamwork, communication, and conflict resolution. It’s particularly helpful for neurodiverse individuals, including those with ADHD, ASD, or social anxiety, but anyone interested in growth through storytelling and role-playing can join.
Do I need to know how to play Dungeons & Dragons to participate?
No prior experience is necessary! Beginners are welcome, and the facilitator will guide participants through the rules and gameplay. The focus is on learning and collaboration, not mastery of the game mechanics.
What kinds of skills will I develop in this group?
Participants will practice:
  • Communication and active listening
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Emotional regulation and resilience
  • Perspective-taking and empathy
How long are the sessions, and how often do they meet?
Sessions are about 1 hour long. The duration of the program will be 10 weeks and meet twice weekly. Final details will be available via email once you are registered. Registration includes a poll to determine availability for weekly sessions.
How is the game structured to be therapeutic?
The facilitator designs the game scenarios and challenges to encourage collaboration, self-reflection, and problem-solving. They also provide real-time feedback and interventions to support skill development. Participants can explore personal goals through their characters in a safe, imaginative environment.
What if I feel anxious about role-playing or group settings?
It’s normal to feel nervous about starting something new. The facilitator creates a supportive, judgment-free space where participants can engage at their comfort level.
What age groups can participate?
Groups are typically organized by age or developmental stage and then by therapeutic need or goals.
Is this group covered by insurance?
Using D&D for therapy groups may qualify for insurance coverage as group therapy. However, this group is a skills group and will not be covered by insurance plans. Although we hope that you find it therapeutic, this iteration is NOT therapy. Future groups might be!
What materials do I need to participate?
Participants need only a stable internet connection with a camera and a willingness to learn. The facilitator will provide any needed physical materials, or direction toward free online materials.
What makes this different from a regular D&D game?
Unlike a regular game, our Dungeons & Dragons group is facilitated by clinicians who intentionally use role-play, storytelling, and teamwork to support social growth. While therapeutic in nature, it is offered as a structured social group rather than formal group therapy.
Are there rules about in-game behavior?
Yes, all participants are expected to respect group norms and other members. The group will build these norms together, and complete a form about go and no-go topics. The facilitator will outline rules for behavior, boundaries, and communication to ensure a safe and inclusive environment.
